According to the results, Caribbean destinations remain the most preferred destinations for travelers, with places like Cancún, the Riviera Maya, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen. The goal is to identify the places Mexicans plan to travel to next year, especially those interested in medium- and long-haul travel.
The study, prepared by Expedia in collaboration with Airline Reporting Corporation (ARC), offers a Top 10 list of Mexican travel trends for 2021 based on tourist searches.
The top five spots are occupied by Cancún, the Riviera Maya, Puerto Vallarta-Riviera Nayarit, Mazatlán, and Los Cabos; Guerrero’s Triangle of the Sun appears in sixth place with Acapulco and in seventh with Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. The list is completed by Huatulco, Chetumal, and Costa Maya.
According to the report, the tourism sector in domestic beach destinations is expected to recover in 2021, even in those further from urban areas such as Los Cabos, Huatulco, and Chetumal.
Toward the end of 2020, there is also interest in traveling to nearby destinations, mainly Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. Acapulco also sees an increase in preferences to end the year, and interest in international travel is also gradually increasing.
