Efforts to revitalize Mazatlán’s struggling tourism sector are beginning to bear fruit as local businesses join forces to overcome months of declining demand in rural restaurants. A partnership between the Chamber of Commerce and the Gastronomic Council has launched initiatives to attract domestic tourists, including a seafood feast at the Congress of the Union, showcasing Mazatlán’s culinary treasures.
Roberto Osuna Valdez, president of the Gastronomic Council, confirmed early signs of success, reporting a significant rise in diners at rural restaurants in La Noria and El Quelite. Visitor numbers surged from a mere 20% of capacity to 60% over the past two weekends, signaling renewed confidence among tourists seeking family outings in scenic towns. This boost directly benefits the local community, providing income through the sale of souvenirs, regional products, and traditional foods.
Looking ahead, restaurant owners are committed to promoting these destinations further, particularly for the upcoming Holy Week and Easter holidays. Additionally, the highly anticipated Motorcycle Week event offers another opportunity for recovery after a six-month tourism slump caused by insecurity linked to organized crime in parts of Sinaloa.
Municipal and tourism authorities are enhancing city attractions in preparation for the influx of visitors. However, concerns over pollution remain, with residents near Jabalines Creek and El Infiernillo estuary complaining about persistent sewage odors. Mayor Estrella Palacios faces mounting pressure to address this issue, as environmental criticism could tarnish Mazatlán’s reputation and pose health risks for locals and tourists alike.
Faith also plays a prominent role in these efforts to unify and inspire Mazatlán. Next Thursday, April 3, the Catholic community will welcome the Apostolic Nuncio to Mexico, Joseph Spiteri. Pope Francis’ representative will celebrate Mass at the Cathedral Basilica, praying for the health of the pontiff and for peace in Sinaloa amid ongoing insecurity. His visit is expected to bring solace to the faithful, as they hope for stability and harmony to return to the region.
