The commerce sector and service providers will focus on strengthening local tourism, especially during the upcoming Holy Week and Easter holiday periods.

The president of the Querétaro Chamber of Commerce, Lorena Muñoz Altamira, predicted that the sector will generate an economic impact of 1.5 billion pesos during this holiday season, from April 14 to 27.

Holy Week is one of the most important holidays in Mexico, both for its religious significance and for the vacation period it represents for students and some workers.

Economic expectations reflect a 12 to 17% increase compared to the same period in 2024, the businesswoman stated. She also estimated that 325,000 tourists will arrive in the state, and between 25,000 and 30,000 religious tourism travelers are expected during the three holy days alone.

“Tourism is a commercial sector that triggers several horizontal lines of business, for example, transportation, food and beverages, and lodging, but it also focuses on additional products already offered, such as tours within the historic center, religious tours, and tours offered not only in the capital but also in other municipalities. There are municipalities with very cherished traditions that we don’t know about in the capital,” he noted.

Domestic Tourism

The state chamber aims to promote local tourism as part of the tourism project, The Great Escape, announced by the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services, and Tourism (Concanaco Servytur).

“Through the confederation, a tourism project called The Great Escape is emerging. It is the commitment made through local chambers to promote local tourism. It means that Querétaro residents get to know Querétaro, that residents of the capital get to know tourist destinations near the capital or what is offered in the mountains and semi-desert,” he explained.

In the country, she shared, 80% of travelers are domestic tourists; the goal is to replicate that percentage in the state.

The businesswoman added that tourism generates 4 million jobs in the country, represents 8.5% of the Gross Domestic Product, and contributes 45 billion pesos in economic value.

Lorena Muñoz explained that the state has a significant tourism offering; she exemplified this with the case of Tolimán, a semi-desert municipality that is preparing a range of tourism products for the upcoming holiday season.

This district expects to receive 5,000 to 10,000 visitors during the holy days, as well as an economic value of 0.5 to 1 million pesos, stated the president of Tolimán, Alejo Sánchez de Santiago.

For the upcoming holiday season, the municipality is preparing religious performances and guided tours from April 13 to 20.
