In a vibrant celebration of Mexican cuisine, the first-ever Taco Festival drew in hundreds of attendees and showcased the rich diversity of the country’s iconic dish. The two-day event, held in the picturesque Plaza 28 de Julio, featured over 50 taqueros (taco vendors) and chefs who wowed visitors with their creative takes on traditional tacos.
Mayor Estefanía Mercado kicked off the festival by cutting the ribbon, praising the local gastronomic sector for responding to her call to participate. “This is an activity focused on promoting the culinary creativity of taco makers and lovers of traditional Mexican cuisine,” she said. “We want to ensure that the wealth of tourism stays in our community, not just in hotels and restaurants.”
Throughout the festival, attendees were treated to a wide range of tacos, from classic options like pastor, suadero, and barbacoa to innovative creations featuring gourmet ingredients and international fusions. Mayor Mercado sampled the various offerings around the flagpole, praising the variety and flavor.
The festival also featured artistic performances, dance, and folklore in the plaza’s amphitheater, as well as a taco contest that drew in top-notch talent from local taquerias. Gil Márquez of “México” took home first prize, followed closely by Erick Anguiano of “Lost Tiki” and Claudia Leticia López of “Diegos.”
“It was more than a success,” said Antón Bojórquez, Secretary of Economic Development and Investment Attraction, during the awards ceremony. “We’re thrilled to see our local community come together to celebrate the rich culinary heritage of Mexico.”
The event was also attended by Municipal Secretary of Tourism Estefanía Hernández, who expressed her gratitude for the support from local diners and foreign visitors alike.
As the festival ends on Monday, it’s clear that Playa del Carmen has set a new standard for taco festivals, bringing people together in celebration of Mexico’s iconic dish. With its unique blend of traditional flavors and innovative twists, this event is sure to become an annual tradition that unites food lovers from far and wide.
