Recognition of the millennial history of corn in Mexico, reform of articles 4 and 27 of the Constitution: Julio Berdegué

On March 17, 2025, the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States (CPEUM), through a decree, established the conservation and protection of native corn in Mexico. This is undoubtedly a very significant achievement, as our national and cultural identity is closely linked to this ancient food.

In this regard, the Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Julio Berdegué Sacristán, stated that “this reform, promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, is historic. In short, it codifies in our Constitution the ancient relationship of the Mexican people with corn.”

He emphasized the importance of elevating to constitutional recognition the recognition of Mexico as the center of origin and diversity of corn, a staple food of the people and the basis of the existence of our indigenous and Afro-Mexican peoples.

“The reform protects native corn varieties, which have been created and preserved (for 10,000 years!) through the seed selection practices carried out by farmers year after year, to this day,” emphasized the head of Agriculture in an article published in the newspaper El Heraldo de México on March 26.
