Mexico City – To prevent accidents and ensure the safety of citizens, especially children, Mexico’s National Water Commission (Conagua) is urging vacationers to exercise extreme caution when swimming in bodies of water during the upcoming Holy Week.
According to a statement released by Conagua, many rivers, lakes, lagoons, dams, and irrigation canals pose significant risks to swimmers due to strong currents, sudden drops or sinkholes, and other hazards. The agency warned that these conditions can cause serious harm or even fatalities, particularly among minors who may not be able to recognize the dangers.
Low water temperatures were also identified as a potential risk factor, as they can lead to muscle cramps in swimmers. Additionally, the presence of mud can hinder movement and trap people, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
Conagua stressed that during Holy Week, it is essential for citizens to take extra precautions when caring for children or engaging in water activities. To support public safety efforts, Conagua has coordinated civil protection systems to implement preventive measures, such as increased surveillance and emergency response planning.
However, the agency emphasized that public participation is crucial in preventing accidents. By being aware of the risks associated with swimming in certain bodies of water and taking necessary precautions, individuals can significantly reduce their chances of injury or harm.
