As part of its efforts to promote tourism during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ) in Quintana Roo is working towards increasing air connectivity with Europe to make the destination a preferred entry point for fans. This includes expanding flights and routes from major European cities such as Spain, Frankfurt, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Amsterdam.
To achieve this goal, the CPTQ has been engaging with airlines interested in operating or increasing their services at Cancun or other Mexican Caribbean airports. A recent visit by a group of airline representatives to conduct an airport review is seen as a significant step forward in securing more direct routes and flights.
According to Andrés Martínez, director of the CPTQ, “We need to increase connectivity to key European destinations to attract visitors for the World Cup.” He emphasized that the FIFA fan fest, which has been proposed for Quintana Roo, will also be a major draw, with efforts underway to establish this event at one of the destination’s airports.
A notable announcement was made recently, with Virgin Atlantic confirming direct flights from Heathrow, London, set to commence by the end of the year. More significant announcements are expected in the coming months, driven by participation in international tourism fairs and events.
Quintana Roo’s airport network connects 118 cities worldwide, including 42 routes to the United States, 24 domestic connections, 21 to Canada, 18 to Europe, and 13 to Latin America. With its growing connectivity and efforts to promote the FIFA World Cup, Quintana Roo is positioning itself as a premier destination for international tourists.
