In a bid to streamline travel and enhance tourist experiences on both sides of the Mexico-Belize border, immigration authorities from Quintana Roo and Belize have forged agreements to facilitate easy entry during the upcoming Easter holidays. This collaboration aims to ensure a seamless journey for visitors while maintaining a swift response to any incidents.

As part of this initiative, Consul José Luis Kelly of the Belize Consulate in Chetumal proposed establishing a working group to promote increased tourist traffic between the two nations. The move is expected to attract between 15,000 and 20,000 Belizean citizens to Quintana Roo’s popular tourist destinations, generating an estimated economic impact of over 30 million pesos for the state.

Belizeans frequently visit Quintana Roo’s southern region, including Chetumal, Bacalar, and Mahahual, where they shop or travel to other Mexican states like Yucatán for medical care. The Corozal free zone also attracts visitors from both countries, who come to shop or take leisurely strolls.

Consul Kelly emphasized the importance of this cross-border flow to the local economy, stating that each Belizean visitor represents direct income for restaurants, hotels, and businesses. To safeguard tourists’ safety, he proposed that both parties provide cordial treatment and respond immediately to any incidents or setbacks that may arise.

Immigration authorities from both sides of the border attended the meeting, including Tatiana Sánchez Reyes of the National Migration Institute (INM) and Ramón Reyes, head of immigration in Santa Elena. This collaborative effort is set to enhance the overall experience for holidaymakers on both sides of the Mexico-Belize border.
