With a call for awareness, collaboration, and education as fundamental pillars, the Inspection and Surveillance Committee for the Protection of Shrimp was established in Mazatlán, with the goal of strengthening actions against illegal fishing and promoting sustainable practices.
The Secretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Flor Emilia Guerra Mena, highlighted that this year the State Government allocated 15 million pesos to strengthen surveillance efforts on the high seas, in bays, and on land. She stated that, beyond resources, the essential element is the will and coordination between authorities and citizens.
“There are no resources that are sufficient if we don’t commit to education and cultural change. The authority belongs to Conapesca, but the responsibility belongs to everyone. We are proud of our fishing, and that pride implies commitment.”

For her part, the Mayor of Mazatlán, Estrella Palacios Domínguez, emphasized the municipality’s support for these efforts through the Ministry of Public Security and the Directorate of Economic Development, Tourism, and Fisheries.
“Closures are not easy for those who depend on fishing. Therefore, we will accompany this process with order, support, and coordination. Protecting shrimp means protecting jobs and well-being.”

The event was attended by representatives from all three levels of government, fishing leaders, and officials such as the Director of Public Security, Jaime Othoniel Barrón Valdez, the Director of Fisheries, Hugo Espinoza García, as well as cooperatives and shipowners, who reaffirmed their commitment to vigilance during the closure.
