A road accident at a state and municipal police checkpoint left three officers dead after a cargo vehicle lost control and failed to stop. The incident was reported early today on the Mazatlán-Durango highway, at the Baluarte Bridge, on the border with Sinaloa.
According to the State Public Security Secretariat’s report, the deceased are municipal officers Ramiro “N” and Julia “N” of the Pueblo Nuevo Police, while the state officer was identified as Cristian Adrián “N” of Durango.
The accident occurred at kilometer 156 of the so-called “superhighway” and caused its closure for more than eight hours in both lanes because the heavy vehicle ended up across the bridge where the police checkpoint was located. According to local authorities, a blue cargo vehicle with a box trailer, license plate number 23UB9Y, was traveling the wrong way on the highway, colliding with another white cargo vehicle with a trailer, license plate number 938EP6.
Two other people were also injured in the accident. Their current medical condition has not been confirmed. However, they were treated by Federal Highway and Bridge Department personnel as first responders.
