The state of Guanajuato has established itself as a fundamental pillar of Mexico’s tourism industry, leveraging its cultural, historical, and natural wealth to attract millions of visitors annually.

This activity not only enriches the national tourism offering but also serves as a key economic driver for the state.

According to Guadalupe Robles León, Secretary of Tourism and Identity of Guanajuato, the state’s tourism sector represents a significant source of income for the state. She explained that in 2024, Guanajuato welcomed 21.9 million visitors, generating an economic impact of more than 51.786 billion pesos.

Furthermore, business tourism has a significant presence in Guanajuato’s economy, representing 8.3% of the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This segment has been fundamental to the region’s economic development, attracting investment and fostering job creation in areas such as accommodation, food services, and transportation.

Roads, an airport, and services—Guanajuato has it all.

The Secretary of Tourism and Identity noted that Guanajuato’s infrastructure has been key to its tourism development. The state has a road network that facilitates land access, with cars being the most popular mode of transportation for visitors, accounting for 63% of visitors, followed by buses at 34%.

Average hotel occupancy is projected at 36%, while the state continues to stand out as a major non-beach tourist destination.

Guanajuato International Airport, located in Silao, connects the state with national and international destinations, increasing the influx of tourists.

In terms of accommodation, Guanajuato offers a wide range of options, from boutique hotels in colonial cities to luxury resorts in tourist areas, ensuring a pleasant stay for all types of travelers.

Therefore, Guanajuato attracts a diverse range of tourists, both domestic and international. Guadalupe Robles León explained that the market segments are varied. For example, there is cultural tourism, where the cities of Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende, with their colonial architecture and renowned festivals, are favorite destinations for culture lovers.

This place is not only a religious destination, but also a place that offers gastronomy and incredible views.

However, there is also business tourism, where cities like León and Irapuato have positioned themselves as industrial and commercial centers, attracting professionals and entrepreneurs.

But that’s not all. Guanajuato also boasts gastronomic tourism, thanks to the state’s culinary richness, with wine and tequila routes that offer unique experiences for foodies.

As if that weren’t enough, the state boasts adventure and ecotourism, where Guanajuato’s natural areas provide opportunities for outdoor activities, such as hiking and exploring ecological reserves.

Synergy with the private sector is key

Guadalupe Robles León stated that Guanajuato offers many business opportunities for those dedicated to tourism. She also noted that there are still many areas of opportunity to address that represent the possibility of generating profitable businesses, such as diversifying into new markets, focusing on staff specialization in tourism services, and thereby innovating and strengthening the industry.

Recently, the state government allocated 28 million pesos to the tourism sector through the GTO Economic Boost Program, benefiting 19 of the 25 municipalities. Additionally, they have implemented strategies focused on innovation, sustainable development, and promotion to adapt their tourism offerings to new market trends.

Guadalupe Robles León commented that Guanajuato continues its path toward consolidating its position as a top-tier tourist destination, balancing tradition and modernity to offer unforgettable experiences to its visitors.
