In a coordinated effort, Mérida’s Municipal Police Department and the Subdirectorate of Fixed, Semi-Fixed, and Street Vendors have removed several street vendors operating in La Plancha Park, particularly at the intersection of 46th and 43rd Streets. The action was prompted by a surge in holiday visitors, as reported in a statement from the Mérida City Council.
The affected stalls, which sold marquesitas, churros, potatoes, and corn on the cob, were deemed hazardous to pedestrians. Officials noted that the vendors obstructed sidewalks, forcing pedestrians to walk along the street at a curve frequented by public transportation. This situation, according to the statement, posed a persistent danger, especially during peak hours.
To deter future installations in the area, authorities placed traffic cones at the site, which will remain for several days. Municipal Police officers and personnel from the Establishments Subdirectorate will also maintain continuous surveillance as a preventative measure.
The City Council emphasized that vendors were relocated to safer locations and that the operation was conducted calmly and with the cooperation of those involved.
