The tradition of getting wet on Holy Saturday in Oaxaca could cost you dearly. The Drinking Water and Sewerage Services Operating System (Soapa) announced that it will apply severe penalties to those who waste drinking water during Holy Week, especially during this dry season and water crisis.
According to the agency, fines can reach up to 100 UMAS, equivalent to more than $11,300 pesos. The punishment could also include the closure or temporary suspension of the drinking water supply.
“Throwing water for fun is an unsustainable practice in the midst of a water crisis. Protecting it must be a priority, not only for us, but for those who need it most,” said Omar Pérez Benítez, general director of Soapa.
The measure seeks to curb one of the most common customs during Holy Saturday: getting wet in public or at home, a practice that today represents an irrational use of water.
How will this measure be enforced?
Monitoring tours will be carried out in areas of Oaxaca de Juárez and municipalities covered by Soapa.
