Councilwoman Petra Juárez reported that she toured the coastal road, which was blocked by a padlocked fence that prevented access, but found it open this Sunday.
“Early this Sunday, I toured the road, where there used to be several fences, which have since been removed, and security personnel were guarding the properties. They asked us if we were from the government, because they were waiting, because the homeowners had notified them to open and remove the fences, because the street would be scraped and would be operational,” the councilwoman stated.
She explained that the state governor, Víctor Castro Cosió, has emphasized in every interview that no roads will be closed. She pointed out that what happened in the Los Cabos council meeting was that the majority of council members approved the disuse of 3.9 kilometers of the coastal road.
“I didn’t agree because I believe the issue needed to be thoroughly investigated, especially considering that this road has existed since 1958; it’s a heritage of the people. We’re supposed to be here to protect this heritage, as well as the well-being of the people of Los Cabos, and my vote was against it, and it goes against anything that affects Los Cabos, the municipality, and the citizens,” she said.

She explained that last week they held a meeting with the Secretariat of Urban Planning, Infrastructure, and Mobility (Sepuimm) and the Municipal Planning Institute (IMPLAN) to analyze some of the issues they observed. “They haven’t resolved the issue yet, but I’m confident that the state government will permanently reopen the road.”
Finally, he commented that the government should focus on having a boardwalk in the municipality, so that the people of Cabo can walk and enjoy the beaches and ensure that everything isn’t privatized.
He explained that, as part of the Legislative Studies Commission, they are working on the local road project. They are also ensuring that it is specified in an official document, not just the coastal road; there are other roads that are not registered in the land registry.
For their part, they consider the defenders of coastal roads and beach access a partial achievement, because the padlocked fences that had been placed to prevent traffic on this road have been removed.
Since the disuse of the coastal road from San José del Cabo to Cabo del Este was announced in the Urban Development Plan (PDU) 2040, citizens have organized to initiate a series of actions against this approval, which was made through the council, where only the councilwoman opposed it.
On social media, comments from the Cabo community were swift, thanking the authorities for their actions in the good of the community by restoring traditional roads, landscapes, sea, beaches, and all the beauty they offer.
The state governor has stated that these access roads are historic, and it is the state’s obligation to maintain community properties, as is the case with the coastal road from San José del Cabo to Cabo del Este, in the municipality of Los Cabos.
