Sonia Yadira de la Garza, Durango prosecutor, said that the driver who struck five local police officers on the Durango-Mazatlán highway could face up to 60 years in prison. This statement was given at the memorial service for Adrián, the State Police officer who lost his life in the accident.

“He faces at least 60 years in prison, and obviously damages, which would also occur if he is found guilty, and obviously injuries to others.”

She stated that the truck was traveling in the wrong direction and in the Mazatlán-Durango lane, striking five officers, killing three and injuring two.

She indicated that the detained suspect got out of the trailer and got into another truck further ahead, and was arrested thanks to intelligence and collaboration with the state of Sonora.

The prosecutor said that so far the investigation is a case of intentional homicide because he was traveling in the wrong lane.

“However, he has the right to a defense and will defend himself accordingly, and a judge will determine his legal situation.”
She indicated that with the evidence currently available, the judge’s ruling is awaited and stated that what matters is the defendant’s response.

For his part, Óscar Galván, Secretary of Public Security, said that the work of the three officers who lost their lives in the accident is recognized, which is why a memorial service was held in Pueblo Nuevo, while in the city of Durango, only Cristián Adrián’s was held.

He also discussed the results of the arrest of the alleged perpetrator so that his legal proceedings can be carried out.

Tribute Held

The funeral ceremony was attended by State Police Officer Christian Adrián Andrade Cortez, who, along with fellow officers from the Municipal Public Security Directorate of Pueblo Nuevo, Durango, Julia González de la Cruz and Ramiro Orozco Buendía, lost their lives in the line of duty last Wednesday, April 16. The ceremony was attended by his family, colleagues, and officials from all three branches of government who performed the corresponding honor guards.
