Between the cobblestone streets and colonial mansions of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, stands the property that preserves the history of one of the greatest legends of Mexican cinema. This is the former home of Mario Moreno, better known as Cantinflas.

An intimate and tranquil corner

The house, known as “La Quinta Cantinflas,” is located on the outskirts of San Miguel’s historic center. It is a mansion that blends the rustic and colonial details that characterize the World Heritage City. It was acquired by the actor in the 1970s, seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of Mexico City.

Cantinflas not only used the property as a vacation home, but also as a space to keep his horses and practice one of his favorite sports: horseback riding. In its stables, he bred high-lineage horses and hosted parties with friends, many of them from the entertainment industry, businessmen, and politicians.

A legacy that prevails

After Mario Moreno’s death in 1993, the house changed hands, and although its interior has been renovated several times, it retains the essence of Cantinflas. It is said that in addition to this property, on the Royal Exit to Querétaro, he also had another one just a few meters away. Both were converted into hotels.

Cantinflas’s presence in San Miguel left a mark on the people of San Miguel. Local residents remember the actor as a friendly and down-to-earth figure, who greeted everyone without the slightest hint of the vanity one might expect from an international star.

San Miguel, a refuge for artists

The choice of San Miguel de Allende was no coincidence. Since the mid-20th century, this city has been a magnet for thousands of artists, intellectuals, and bohemians, attracted by its peaceful atmosphere, its cultural richness, and its architectural beauty.
