A young man exposed two officers from Mexico City’s Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC) for covering his license plate number and carrying an acrylic license plate, which is prohibited by the capital’s traffic regulations.

Through social media, a young man named Max exposed two officers on a motorcycle who had allegedly stopped a driver for his license plate number. However, when he noticed they were covering his license plate number, he confronted them.

The young man noticed that the officers had black plastic covering his license plate on the sides of the motorcycle, so he approached the officers and asked them to remove it, while he uncovered his license plate number.

“They’re covering his license plate. Look how it’s covering his license plate. Can you uncover it, friend? Because this is really wrong,” the young man commented while the officer tried to “explain” to him.

As he removed the vehicle’s license plate, a female officer tried to take it from his hands, saying, “What’s wrong with you? You don’t care.”

Both officers attempted to confront the young man, claiming he had taken something that wasn’t his. He then told the detained driver to continue on his way, citing the officers’ misconduct.

After a few seconds of discussion with the officers, whom he asked for identification because they didn’t have their name tags, the officers boarded the motorcycle, intending to leave.

However, before they could move forward, the young man removed the acrylic plate they were carrying as a license plate.

“Look at your little cardboard tag, I have it right here. That’s not a license plate,” he commented.

“No, buddy, it’s not fair. You’re really working,” the officer said after stopping to get the young man to return the removed license plate.

“Here I had a cover and we just dismantled, so to speak, a fake patrol car,” the young man said before the police officers left the scene.

It’s worth mentioning that Article 45, Section 1, Paragraph B of the Mexico City Traffic Regulations states that all license plates must be properly displayed, visible, and free of any object that obstructs their reading. This can be punished with a fine equivalent to 20, 25, or 30 times the current unit of measurement and updating, that is, from 2,262.80 pesos to 3,394.20 pesos.

SSC Evaluates Sanctions for Officers

After the video was shared, the Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) reported that the two officers were brought before personnel from the General Directorate of Internal Affairs for the internal administrative investigation file.

He also explained that the corresponding investigations will be conducted to sanction the uniformed officers in accordance with internal regulations and statutes.
