The Yucatán Ministry of Tourism (SEFOTUR), under the leadership of Joaquín Díaz Mena, is reaffirming its commitment to community-based and sustainable tourism through internationally recognized initiatives that highlight environmental responsibility and Yucatecan heritage.

Two standout projects were announced at a press conference: the Aldea Maya Xa’ Anil Naj in Santa Elena, recipient of the Silver Award for “Best Indigenous and Community Tourism Initiatives” at the WTM Latin America Responsible Tourism Awards, and the Ejido San Crisanto A.C. in Sinanché, honored with the Green Destination Story Awards in the Nature and Landscape category.

The Aldea Maya Xa’ Anil Naj award was presented to Gladys Collí Ek on April 15 in São Paulo, while José Inés Loría Palma received the San Crisanto Ejido’s distinction at the ITB Berlin 2025 Fair on March 4.

During the press conference, SEFOTUR head Darío Flota Ocampo and Raúl Paz Noriega, Undersecretary of Sustainable Tourism Development, commended the winners for their contributions. The projects were recognized for their added value, positive community impact, and role in positioning Yucatán as a global leader in sustainable tourism.

Flota Ocampo expressed pride in these achievements and reaffirmed SEFOTUR’s dedication to promoting initiatives that celebrate Yucatecan culture, nature, and traditions, attracting visitors from around the world.

The Xa’ Anil Naj Mayan Village stood out as one of 22 finalists among 164 initiatives from 14 countries. The village offers an authentic experience where visitors can learn and participate in traditional Yucatecan culinary practices alongside community members. Support from the Yucatecan Institute of Entrepreneurs (IYEM) and Aeroméxico facilitated the receipt of this prestigious award.

Meanwhile, the San Crisanto Ejido earned a place in the global top 100 sustainable tourism stories. This project seamlessly blends Mayan heritage with modern sustainability practices, preserving its natural environment while fostering a sustainable economy. The community’s participation in carbon markets through mangrove conservation and reforestation further underscores its commitment to ecological preservation.

These initiatives exemplify Yucatán’s role as a pioneer in sustainable tourism, ensuring the preservation of its natural and cultural treasures while promoting economic growth.
