Zacatecas, first in the nation in gold mining

Gold production in Zacatecas reached its highest levels in at least two years, according to the country’s latest Mining and Metallurgical Industry Report.

In February 2025, the state’s mines reported the extraction of 4,055 kilograms, making Zacatecas the leading gold producer in Mexico.

According to statistics released by INEGI (National Institute of Statistics and Geography), the state experienced an annual increase of 35.3%, with 1,058 kilograms more produced than in February 2024.

Zacatecas’ positive trend contrasts with the decline in gold production in Mexico, which contracted 4.9%.

48.6% of the gold produced in Zacatecas comes from the municipality of Mazapil, where the Peñasquito mine is located; while 1,933 kilograms were extracted in Fresnillo, representing 47% of the state’s gold.

Other metals on the rise

Silver production in Zacatecas also reached its highest levels since 2023, with a total of 240,229 kilograms, maintaining the state’s national leader in silver production.

This balance translates to an annual increase of 42.2%, contrasting with the results of Chihuahua, the second-largest silver producer, where the trend was 5.6%.

Lead production in Zacatecas grew 15.3% in the second month of 2025, reaching 14,118 tons, the highest figure achieved in Mexico.

The state also remains the leader in zinc production, which experienced a positive annual increase of 61.7%.
Meanwhile, Zacatecas ranks second in copper production, after Sonora.
