A tourist couple was physically attacked by their Airbnb hosts after refusing to pay an extra charge for returning sand-covered towels in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and has been reported to the state Attorney General’s Office.
According to a complaint filed with the authorities, Luz Rosette and Nino Hernández, the owners of the “Casa Xaa” accommodation, demanded an additional charge from the tourists for bringing sand-covered towels back to their rental property. When the couple refused to pay, the situation escalated into a violent confrontation.
Videos shared on social media show Rosette physically assaulting one of the female tourists while her companion is also confronted. The images reveal injuries allegedly suffered by the tourists during the attack, prompting outrage and criticism of the hosts.
The couple affected by the incident accused the “Casa Xaa” operators of assault, threats, and unlawful deprivation of liberty. In response to the allegations, the accommodation issued a statement claiming that the guests had repeatedly violated the rules of coexistence and attempted to steal one of their cell phones, which was allegedly recorded on security cameras.
However, in an unusual admission, Rosette and Hernández acknowledged that their actions were not the most appropriate, citing an “altered emotional state.” The pair apologized for the way the eviction unfolded but refused to release the security footage mentioned in their statement.
The attacked tourist, identified as Samantha, denied any involvement in the alleged robbery and demanded that the recordings be released to clarify the events. Airbnb has yet to issue a formal response to the incident.
This case has raised concerns about safety and accountability among short-term rental platforms like Airbnb. The incident has sparked a wider debate on the need for stricter regulations to protect both hosts and guests.
