Against all odds, Easter Week in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo has surprised visitors with a surprising influx of domestic visitors, particularly those with high purchasing power, at a time of the holiday season that usually sees a drop in hotel occupancy. Midway through this week, hotels are reporting occupancy rates above 85 percent.
The manager of the Barceló Ixtapa hotel, Miguel Ángel López Ayala, acknowledged that, although reservation records did not reflect a high level of activity, many tourists have arrived directly without prior notice to request accommodations, which has generated an unexpected upswing in demand. This trend has also been observed by other hotels in the destination.
Tourism entrepreneurs agree that these positive results are the result of coordinated promotional efforts by the municipal government, the Guerrero Tourism Secretariat, and the Convention and Visitors Bureau (OCV). In addition, they highlight key factors such as the good condition of the beaches, the cleanliness of the destination, the quality of the services, the gastronomic offerings, and the climate, which continues to be one of the main attractions.
Beyond official promotion, what has the greatest influence, they say, is direct recommendations among friends and family, as well as spontaneous dissemination by tourists themselves on social media. The expectation is that this second holiday weekend will close strongly and continue to generate economic benefits for the various sectors that depend on tourism in the region.
