Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon affirmed that Mexico is in an advantageous position regarding the tariffs that the United States has begun to apply to various countries, which lower the cost of Mexican exports and improve its international competitiveness.
During President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s morning press conference, Ebrard explained that this situation is due to the system of comparative disadvantages, which evaluates which country is more expensive to export products to the United States.
“Today, Mexico is in a better position. It is cheaper to export from Mexico than from the rest of the world,” the official stated.
Steel, aluminum, and business relocation
In the specific case of steel and aluminum, Ebrard explained that 77% of Mexican exports of these products do not face tariffs, unlike other countries that face rates of 10%, 20%, or even more than 200%.
“For Mexican exporters, this tariff-free percentage represents a significant competitive advantage over their international competitors,” he noted.
Ebrard anticipated that this advantage will be decisive for the relocation of companies to the country (nearshoring), since exporting from Asia to the US will be considerably more expensive than exporting from Mexico.
“We are going to see more companies relocating than we had even anticipated. A door is opening with many opportunities,” he noted.
Strategic Advantage in Treaties and Negotiations
The Secretary of Economy emphasized that this advantage is the result of previous negotiations and trade agreements that have kept Mexico in a strong position in the US market.
He emphasized that the country must take advantage of this situation to attract foreign direct investment and strengthen regional supply chains.
