Protest called in San Cristóbal for double femicide in Chamula

2

Following the double femicide that occurred last weekend in the municipality of San Juan Chamula, located in the Altos region of Chiapas, and the capture of the alleged perpetrator in the state of Tabasco, various non-governmental organizations (NGOs), activists, and citizens have expressed their condemnation of this unfortunate event. This femicide marks the first time that a crime of this nature has occurred in the Tsotsil indigenous municipality.

For this reason, these collectives and women’s groups are calling for a demonstration this Friday afternoon, April 25th, in the center of the city of San Cristóbal de las Casas. The protest will take place in the Plaza Catedral, where all citizens, men and women, are invited to attend with candles and flowers as symbols of solidarity and resistance.

The organizations have stated that, in response to the double femicide, the crime was not a crime of passion, as the authorities have claimed, but rather a product of a patriarchal system that continues to perpetuate gender-based violence. The call is for everyone to gather at 5:00 p.m. in the Plaza Catedral to raise their voices and demand justice for the two young victims, as well as to demand a full clarification of this tragic incident and the full punishment of the femicide.

This organization will hold a press conference and then a march in the capital city seeking to have this act judged as a femicide and not a “crime of passion.”

“It wasn’t a crime of passion; it was a patriarchal macho act. We raise our voices to demand justice for the two young victims of femicide in Chamula. We invite you to join the protest tomorrow, Friday, in the Plaza Catedral, carrying candles and flowers as a sign of our solidarity and resistance. Join us on this occasion to sanction and condemn this double femicide. No more victimization!” the organizing groups expressed.
