A 71-year-old American woman whose body was found on Tuesday, April 22, in the municipality of Progreso, Yucatán, had been reported missing by a neighbor and friend just days earlier. The investigation into her death has now led authorities to suspect her own son as a possible perpetrator.

Linda Louise “J.” was last seen in Chicxulub Puerto, near the nightlife zone, where her body was later discovered by agents of the State Investigation Police (PEI) and the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE). According to officials, the cause of death has not yet been determined as the investigation is still ongoing.

The woman had been missing since last Thursday, April 17, when a neighbor reported her disappearance to 911. The caller revealed that Linda Louise “J.” had been beaten by her son days prior to going missing. This information was shared with authorities who then launched an investigation into her disappearance and subsequent death.

In response to the report, the SSP’s C5i Control Center alerted local units and the State Investigation Police, who coordinated with the Attorney General’s Office to initiate the necessary investigations. An Alba alert was issued to inform the public about the disappearance of the American woman, and authorities have been working tirelessly to gather evidence.

Business owners and residents in Chicxulub Port provided crucial videos and information to aid in the investigation, according to the Attorney General’s Office. However, officials are unable to release further details as the investigation has not yet concluded, and the facts need to be clarified before any arrests can be made.

Data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) suggests that Yucatán is one of the states with the lowest crime rates. Between January and March 2025, a total of 1,149 crimes were recorded in the state, ranking it 31st in crime rates.

This contrasts sharply with other Mexican states, such as the State of Mexico, which reported a staggering 88,863 cases over the same period. The SESNSP also noted that Yucatán had one of the lowest numbers of femicide cases in the country.

In an alarming trend, data from January to February 2025 shows that the State of Mexico had 11 women murdered as victims of femicide, making it the entity with the highest number of such cases. Other states with high numbers of femicide victims include Mexico City (7), Morelos and Puebla (6), and Tamaulipas.

As authorities continue to investigate Linda Louise “J.”‘s death, her family and loved ones are left to grapple with the tragic loss. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that some women face in Mexico, where violence against women remains a pervasive issue.
