A harrowing discovery was made on a Cancún beach after four days of searching, revealing the remains of an American tourist who had drowned in the sea last Sunday.
The body of Alejandro Cortés González, 20, was discovered at Chac Mool beach, with eyewitnesses describing the gruesome scene. The young man’s skeleton was largely intact, but his head and other body parts were missing, consumed by marine life.
According to witnesses, Cortés had been swept away by a strong ocean current while attempting to save the life of his partner, Lyric Torsey. The couple ignored warnings from lifeguards not to enter the sea due to the rough conditions.
The incident occurred at approximately 6 p.m. on April 20, with many tourists present who had heeded the warning signs and stayed out of the water. A red flag was posted, indicating that swimming was not allowed.
Civil Protection officials confirmed that the body was located in front of the Portofino condominium, near kilometer 9.5 of Kukulcán Boulevard, within the hotel and commercial zone of Cancún.
Tourist police and the National Guard secured the site while experts from the State Attorney General’s Office recovered the remains. Once the investigation was completed, Cortés’ head and skeleton were transferred to the Forensic Medical Service for processing.
Torsey, who was rescued by lifeguards, is currently being treated at a private hospital in stable condition.
