The commander of the Ministerial Criminal Investigation Agency (AMIC), Ulises Omar Cota Montaño, was shot and killed this Tuesday in the El Progreso neighborhood of La Paz, Baja California Sur. The victim was the nephew of former state governor Leonel Cota Montaño.
According to initial reports, the attack occurred in the afternoon, while the commander was off duty. Armed individuals intercepted him and shot him multiple times. Omar Cota Montaño died at the scene.
The State Attorney General’s Office (PGJE) confirmed the murder in an official statement, in which it expressed its condolences to the agent’s family and assured that the corresponding investigations are underway to clarify the crime and find those responsible.
“We deeply regret the loss of a comrade committed to justice. We will not rest until this cowardly act is clarified and those responsible are brought to justice,” the agency stated.

Authorities expressed their condolences to the commander’s family through social media and official statements and reiterated to the public that they are working on the case to reduce the level of violence in the state.
Cota Montaño had more than 15 years of experience in public security and had held various positions within the PGJE (General Directorate of Public Security).
In recent years, he actively participated in investigations related to high-impact crimes, including operations against organized crime.
Former Governor Leonel Cota Montaño mourned his nephew’s death on social media, where he demanded justice and expressed his grief.
“He was a brave man, committed to his work, and with a deep calling to serve his state. Violence cannot continue to take the lives of those who seek to protect us,” he wrote.
State Governor Víctor Castro Cosío also condemned the murder and reiterated his support for the security forces.
“This attack is not only against a public servant, it is against the rule of law. We will redouble our efforts to protect those who risk their lives every day to maintain peace,” he said.
The area was cordoned off by members of various forces, and the commander’s body was taken to the Forensic Medical Service for a legal autopsy. Meanwhile, the state Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation and activated search protocols for the alleged attackers.
Recent state reports indicate that attacks against police officers reflect a panorama of heightened violence that the country continues to face. The Investigative Police reiterates that these officers have been at constant risk after investigating and combating organized crime in Baja California Sur.
