Drug traffickers realign forces in BCS: four executions in 24 hours

Narco-messages and four executions in 24 hours shattered the “tranquility” enjoyed by the residents of Baja California Sur. State Governor Víctor Castro Cosío described the events as a reorganization and revenge by criminal groups, primarily affiliated with “La Mayiza” and “La Chapiza.”

He stated that the perpetrator of the violence is Abraham Cervantes Escareaga, alias “El Babay,” as his nickname appears in the signature of the messages, and that this is due to his recent departure from the Cefereso No. 5 prison in the state of Veracruz.

“It’s a matter of revenge, because just 10 days ago, in Guerrero Negro, we dismantled a very important organized crime cell that likely had ties to the north. Well-organized crime. It wasn’t the first time, it’s not the first time they put up banners on various bridges or in various public places, and they hadn’t carried out their threats. Now they executed her. A violent force that appears there, his nickname (‘Babay’), has been released. I believe it stems from a reorganization,” Castro acknowledged.

New narco-banners in Baja California Sur claim responsibility for the execution of the Narcotics Commander of the State Attorney General’s Office (PGJE), Ulises Cota Montaño, executed on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 22, as he arrived at his home in the municipality of La Paz.

According to the information obtained, after 5:00 p.m., the criminal investigation agent was returning to his home, located on Del Tiro Street, in the Camino Real neighborhood. However, he was being pursued from a distance by a black pickup truck on the ground and by a drone that was simultaneously recording his journey.

When he parked in front of his home, the pickup truck transporting the gunmen pulled up alongside him and fired bursts from a long-range weapon. Ulises was killed inside a gray Tacoma pickup truck. The armed attack was recorded by the home’s surveillance camera and by aerial images allegedly from the criminal group.

On the morning of Wednesday the 23rd, two narco-banners appeared in Guerrero Negro and Santa Rosalía, in the municipality of Mulegé: one at the Colegio de Bachilleres (COBACH) and the second at the Bei Jing Chinese restaurant, respectively.

The narco-banners indicated that the armed attack had been perpetrated by Abraham Cervantes Escareaga, alias “El Babay.” This was the message:

“WHOEVER WARNS IS NOT A TRAITOR. KEEP SUPPORTING THE SHORT-LEGGED, THIS IS HOW ALL MUNICIPALITIES WILL REMAIN AS THEY WERE TOLD. WE ALREADY KNOW WHO THEY ARE: THE MUNICIPAL, STATE, AND PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE. Sincerely, BABAY.”

The PGJE agent was traveling home without a guard to back him up, despite the fact that the night before he had already been threatened with narco-banners, mentioning him, another member of the Prosecutor’s Office named Humberto Yee, a Municipal Police commander named Miramontes, and all the commanders of the Municipal, State, and Prosecutor’s Offices.

The banners were hung on the night of Monday, April 21, at Montoya High School in Santa Rosalía and another at the San José del Cabo International Airport, in the municipality of Los Cabos.

Also in the latter town, a body was found dead on Tuesday at noon on the dirt road leading to the San Lázaro dam in San José del Cabo. The body showed signs of violence and was decapitated. He was wearing a sweatshirt and blue pants.

Similarly, at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, on Juan Carlón Street in the Fundo Legal neighborhood of Guerrero Negro (the northernmost municipality in the state), a maroon KIA pickup truck was intercepted by gunmen. A soldier named Roberto “N,” a second lieutenant assigned to the 40th Military Zone of the National Defense Secretariat (SEDENA), was traveling in the truck, accompanied by a civilian welder.

The attackers fired their high-caliber weapons at the pickup truck, leaving the soldier dead inside. The civilian was taken to a hospital for treatment, where he died minutes later from gunshot wounds.
