The illegal construction of a road connecting Federal Highway 307 (Cancún-Chetumal) with the Tulum-Cobá highway in Quintana Roo has been shut down following public outcry. Activist José Urbina, representing the “Sélvame del Tren” movement, confirmed that the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) intervened to halt the project.

In an interview with 88.9 Noticias, Urbina revealed that the project, spearheaded by the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) and the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT), led to the destruction of hundreds of trees along a 26-kilometer stretch. He commended Profepa for responding swiftly to public concerns, stating, “They showed up, saw what was happening, and today that road is closed.”

Call for Restoration of the Mayan Jungle

Urbina emphasized the importance of adhering to environmental laws and urged Sedena to prioritize public interests over its own. He called for the restoration of the affected area of the Mayan Jungle to its original state, highlighting the ecological significance of the region.

The activist also warned of the potential damage to the Sac Atún aquifer, the most vital water source in the area, had the project continued unchecked. The incident underscores the need for vigilance in protecting Quintana Roo’s natural resources from unauthorized development.
