A worrying fact is beginning to attract attention among Mexican taxpayers: more than 30% of tax refund applications are rejected by the Tax Administration Service (SAT).
This figure, revealed by the specialized platform TaxDown, highlights a problem that goes beyond tax procedures: the growing distrust among those seeking to recover their money.
For many citizens, the process is exhausting and opaque.
The most frustrating thing is that people who do try to recover their money often encounter a wall of bureaucracy that doesn’t provide clear answers,” said Óscar Sosa, Country Manager of TaxDown Mexico.
The bureaucratic wall Sosa refers to is often made up of errors that may seem minor, but that have significant consequences for the refund process.
Despite this, the platform insists that a rejection doesn’t mean all is lost. There are mechanisms to correct and resubmit the request.

These errors mean the SAT won’t issue a refund.
The reasons behind these rejections are varied and, in many cases, avoidable. From something as simple as a misspelled account number to more complex issues like incorrectly issued invoices or duplicate documents, the reasons for errors are frequently repeated.
Sosa explains that “in many cases, these are small oversights that could be easily resolved if the proper means are known.”
However, widespread ignorance about these options leads many people to abandon the process prematurely.
Most taxpayers are unaware that they have the right to submit clarifications or corrections after an initial rejection by the SAT. Unfortunately, this lack of knowledge causes many to quickly give up and lose money that rightfully belongs to them,” the executive adds.
Main Reasons Why the SAT Rejects Refunds
According to information compiled by TaxDown, these are the most common errors that cause a request to be rejected:
Errors in Personal Data: Incomplete or misspelled information, such as bank account numbers, generates automatic rejections.
Inconsistencies in Invoices: If online digital tax receipts (CFDI) contain errors, the entire process can be affected.
Duplicate Deductions: Recording the same deductible expense more than once is a common mistake and is severely penalized by the SAT.
Sosa warns that, although these may seem like minor details, “the SAT is especially rigorous with documentation. Any inaccurate information can cause significant delays in the refund.”
In response to this situation, TaxDown is promoting an alternative that seeks to simplify the process and reduce obstacles:
This creates mistrust and causes many to give up along the way.
That’s why we’re committed to a system that’s easy, fast, and without fine print,” concludes the firm’s representative in Mexico.
How can you check if your information is correct?
The SAT has made the receipt viewer available to verify that the information taxpayers have provided during the tax return process is correct.

They also reminded that the deadline to file the 2024 annual return is April 30.
