The National Workers’ Housing Fund Institute (Infonavit) has announced plans to construct affordable homes in Quintana Roo, with a maximum price of 600,000 pesos. This initiative aims to provide housing for individuals earning between one and three minimum wages, fulfilling a long-standing commitment to accessible housing.
Octavio Romero Oropeza, Infonavit’s general director, explained that the pricing aligns with the loan amounts beneficiaries can access. He emphasized that many eligible individuals have been unable to find suitable housing for over a decade due to a lack of affordable options. The program prioritizes single mothers, heads of households, caregivers with children, and individuals with disabilities, with length of service as a key eligibility criterion.
The first phase of the project will include 12,000 homes, each measuring 60 square meters and featuring green spaces within the complexes. Romero Oropeza highlighted that these homes will be equipped with essential services such as water, electricity, sewage, and transportation, and will be located near schools, workplaces, and hospitals to ensure dignified living conditions.
Javier Olvera Silveira, president of the Caribbean Business Coordinating Council (CCE), confirmed that a local real estate developer will oversee the construction of these social housing units. The project, launched in Paraíso Maya, was strategically placed in an area with existing schools, shops, hospitals, and public services. Olvera Silveira described Paraíso Maya as a “natural growth” zone within the municipality of Benito Juárez, with established planning and infrastructure.
This initiative represents a significant step toward addressing the housing needs of low-income workers in Quintana Roo, ensuring access to quality homes in well-connected and serviced areas.
