A food poisoning incident at an event in Tabasco resulted in 43 individuals falling ill, with 10 requiring hospitalization due to symptoms such as vomiting, dizziness, and stomach pain. The Mexican Red Cross, Tabasco branch, led by operational coordinator Leonel Enríquez, provided immediate assistance.
The event, which featured cheerleaders representing various municipalities, began in the afternoon under extreme heat conditions. The Red Cross reported delivering 73 services for dehydration and other health issues during the event. Among the most severe cases were members of the Emiliano Zapata cheerleading team, who suffered mass food poisoning after consuming allegedly spoiled sandwiches.
While there were rumors that alcohol might have been mixed with the food, Enríquez clarified that the Red Cross lacks the authority to conduct breathalyzer tests. He stated that the symptoms were consistent with foodborne illness caused by spoiled food.
Enríquez confirmed that those who required medical attention are now out of danger, and the situation did not escalate further. Emergency services present at the event responded promptly to address the high demand for assistance.
In light of the incident, Enríquez urged the public to take precautions against the intense heat in Tabasco. Recommendations include avoiding prolonged sun exposure, wearing light-colored clothing, staying hydrated, and exercising caution during fair festivities to prevent similar health emergencies.
