On April 25, members of the Navy (Semar) arrested Marcos Iván “N,” alias “Marquitos,” the leader of a Los Mayos cell of the Sinaloa Cartel operating in the state of Baja California Sur.
The announcement of this arrest was made by the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Omar García Harfuch, who indicated that his arrest was aided by information from the National Intelligence Center, in coordination with state agencies.
Along with “Marquitos,” six other individuals were arrested. According to federal authorities, they operate in the municipalities of La Paz and Los Cabos, where various violent incidents have occurred in recent days.
“Today, in an operation led by Semar (Secretary of State for the Defense of the Republic), with information from the National Intelligence Center, in coordination with the Secretariat of Public Security of the State of Baja California Sur (PGJEBCS), and the SSPC (Secretary of Public Security of the State of Baja California Sur), a criminal group operating in La Paz and Los Cabos was dismantled. Seven people were arrested, and weapons, ammunition, cars, and drugs were seized,” the secretary stated on social media.
The secretary, who thanked the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) for its support, stated that those arrested are responsible for the murder of a member of the BCS State Criminal Investigation Agency.
Security alert in Baja California Sur after wave of violence
The SSPC reported this Friday morning the arrest of four men, between the ages of 22 and 29, following an operation in the municipality of Los Cabos, Baja California Sur.
The arrest took place in the Arcos del Sol neighborhood and was the result of a search warrant issued by a judge as part of an investigation into a series of violent incidents on Thursday.
According to the SSPC, seven firearms, magazines, and cartridges were seized during the operation.
These events have raised concerns among local and federal authorities, as well as the U.S. Embassy in Mexico, which issued a security alert for its citizens.
The U.S. Embassy alert responds to a growing wave of violence in the tourist cities of Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, and La Paz.
On April 24, three public transportation vehicles were reported set on fire in different parts of Los Cabos. These acts, allegedly perpetrated by armed individuals, triggered a series of operations by security forces to locate and arrest those responsible.
During these operations, in the early hours of Friday, authorities faced an armed attack while attempting to search the home where the alleged perpetrators of the fires on the three passenger buses were located.
However, federal officers from various agencies managed to repel the attack and control the situation.
The head of the PGJEBCS (General Directorate of Public Prosecutions), Antonio López Rodríguez, held a press conference in which he detailed the violent events that occurred in recent days.
Among the incidents mentioned were the murder of an active member of the Secretariat of National Defense in the municipality of Guerrero Negro, as well as the murder of an officer enrolled in the anti-narcotics unit, among others.
