A tourist couple was physically and verbally assaulted by the owners of the Casa Xaa hotel, located on Zicatela Beach in Puerto Escondido, for leaving a pair of towels soiled with sand. The incident was reported to the Deputy Prosecutor’s Office in the Costa region.
According to the victim, Samantha N, the physical assault and threats with a machete occurred on April 18, when they were checking out of the property, which had been booked through Airbnb.
On social media, Samantha stated that one of the owners, whom she identified as Nino Hernández Cortés, threatened them with a machete, while a woman, Luz Rosette, hit her and held her partner hostage.

“My partner and I have multiple injuries, scratches, and bruises on various parts of our bodies. They don’t have a single mark because we never responded to their attacks. And all because of sand on the beach towels. Please don’t come to this place,” she stated.
She mentioned that she presented evidence of the attack, including the video, to the Attorney General’s Office. She also pointed out deficiencies in Airbnb’s hosting evaluation mechanisms.
Following the complaint in digital media, internet users’ ingenuity was swift, and “Lady Oaxaca Towels” emerged as a nickname for the owners of the Casa Xaa hotel in Puerto Escondido.
In this regard, the hotel owners acknowledged the attack on guest Samantha N, but it was because she “invaded their private area.”
She also acknowledged that “her reaction was not the best,” and apologized.
