In Puerto Escondido, 5 days without electricity: users outraged

Federal Electricity Commission customers living in Puerto Escondido have been without power for five days. “It’s a complete mockery. We’ve submitted the report six times, and the 071 line doesn’t even pay attention to us,” they stated.

Power outages are common in the coastal region; in the middle of the holiday season, there is no service in Puerto Escondido, which must cope with and handle the wave of tourists arriving following the opening of the Barranca Larga Ventanilla highway.

Both national and international visitors, as well as residents, reported that the constant blackouts have led to frequent reports on social media and local media about power outages, especially at night or during meteorological events, such as the rains recorded in recent days.

An image of a lit candle in the darkness in a location that could be the beach, a business, a home, or a patio supports the list of areas in Puerto Escondido without power. The count includes Puerto Escondido, Parota, the Airport, and Las Flores. Facebook comments include San Gabriel Mixtepec and the town of Mandingas, part of San Pedro Mixtepec.

Another user notes that 071 doesn’t answer our call. “They keep us waiting, they don’t answer, they tell us there’s already a report, but they never fix it,” says a Buenos Aires resident tired of waiting for power. “We have visitors, businesses, perishable food at home, and on top of that, this heat!” residents of the coast confide.

From April 1, 2019 to April 2024, there are an average of 10 power outages per day; The public company acknowledges 19,659 power outages in one of the 570 municipalities that make up the state, affecting Oaxacan consumers for minutes, hours, or days at a time. This impact impacts production, the use of electrical appliances, recreation, and the provision of electricity to streets and homes, education, refrigeration, and security services, among others.

On April 2, also in Puerto Escondido, users reported a lack of electricity in the Hidalgo Sector, as well as in the center of Puerto Escondido, from the Main Bay to Federal Highway 200. “We call on the Federal Electricity Commission to normalize this important basic service.”

“On Saturday, April 12, they installed a transformer for us because the previous one burned out, and we were without power for 28 hours, starting at 7:00 PM on Friday, April 11,” reads another post on the Puerto Global website. “They lied to us, saying they would give us a new transformer with greater capacity. The transformer they installed isn’t new; it was brought down from Guerrero Street,” the affected residents complained.

“Today, the residents went to the CFE offices and filed a collective complaint. They signed an agreement to upgrade one transformer on the same pole on April 23.

They told us they would have someone in charge of turning on the transformer until they installed the other one, in case it keeps shutting down due to overheating and we lose service. But we’re still without power again and no one is answering us,” the residents insisted.

“We demand immediate attention. We live in more than 28 homes and the affected businesses,” complained the Buenos Aires residents, tired of what they consider a mockery by the CFE.
