In an atmosphere of pride, tradition, and joy, the celebrations for the 493rd anniversary of Oaxaca de Juárez’s elevation to the status of city began this morning.

On the Alameda de León, starting at 6:45 a.m., hundreds of residents and visitors gathered to enjoy a program full of identity and emotion, which included the playing of the shawm, the ringing of bells, a moving concert by the City Choir, the participation of tenor Rodrigo Petate, and a performance by the State Music Band, the City Council shared in a statement.

The Oaxacan “chinas” of Doña Genoveva Medina danced the traditional “Jarabe del Valle” (Jarabe del Valle) that characterizes the Oaxacan capital.

As is tradition, a tasting of tamales and atole, a symbol of the generosity and warmth of the Oaxacan people, was also offered.

Mayor Ray Chagoya led this festive start and invited all residents of the capital to join in this important celebration: “Let us celebrate this anniversary with pride, which reminds us of the greatness of Oaxaca and the love for our city. Today we celebrate our history and our commitment to continue transforming the present together,” he said.

The activities were enthusiastically attended by families, tourists, and neighbors who joined in the festivities early in the morning.

The event will continue in the evening with one of the most anticipated events: the free concert by Los Ángeles Azules, as part of the Rodolfo Morales Spring Festival, in the same space.
