In an emotional toast held at Punto Cero’s offices, winemakers, industry allies, academics, and tourism representatives gathered to celebrate the first Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) for Querétaro wine, granted by the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), an unprecedented recognition in Mexico.

This distinction not only protects the authenticity of Querétaro wine against imitations, but also consolidates its identity and strengthens its presence in national and international markets. The PGI represents a milestone for the development of the wine sector, one of the state’s most important economic, tourism, and cultural activities, which has positioned Querétaro as Mexico’s leading wine tourism destination.

The event was also an opportunity to recognize the collective efforts of everyone involved in this achievement: winemakers, oenologists, academics, tourism promoters, and authorities, including the Querétaro State Government, whose participation has been key in promoting and consolidating this industry.

The president of the Querétaro Wine Cluster, Eugenio Parrodi Wiechers, indicated that, out of every 100 bottles consumed in Mexico, at least 38 are of domestic origin.

The only official statement was that of Eugenio Parrodi Wiechers, president of the Querétaro Wine Cluster, who stated: “Today, with this recognition, we are proud of what we have achieved and committed to continuing to work so that Querétaro wine remains synonymous with quality, passion, and pride.”

The celebration, which reflected the harmonious relationship and collaboration among the various stakeholders in the wine ecosystem, was attended by Ana Paula Robles, director of the Mexican Wine Council; María de la Soledad del Río, from Arkansas State University, Querétaro Campus; as well as representatives from the hotel, restaurant, and tourism sectors.

The toast also took place on the eve of the upcoming grape harvest season, which begins in June and represents one of the most anticipated times of the year for the region, attracting thousands of visitors and strengthening the connection between wine, the land, and Querétaro’s culture.
