This Thursday, the Guadalajara City Council began installing fencing in Revolución Park, also known as “Red Park,” to proceed with the remodeling of this public space in a comprehensive intervention that, according to the Director of Public Works of Guadalajara, Juan Carlos Arauz, will last at least five months.

Given this situation, the vendors who have been operating in this space illegally for several years will no longer be able to do so starting this Saturday, as the intervention work has already begun.

In this regard, some of the vendors demonstrated this Friday morning at Guadalajara City Hall, demanding that the authorities allow them to operate, even though they do not have official permits to operate in this space.

Regarding this, Margarita Valle, head of the Office of the General Secretary, stated that a working and dialogue table was established to seek alternatives that would allow them to continue their grape harvests.

For example, he indicated, some of the vendors have a permit to set up shop at the Saturday cultural market, a space recognized and regulated by the Guadalajara City Council’s Tianguis and Public Spaces Directorate, and they will be able to return to it without issue because they already have this permit.

Those who are not part of the cultural market but were also set up in the “Red Park” will be offered other space options so they can continue with their projects. Therefore, in reviewing each individual case, the best alternative will be sought.

“They had already been informed that this park would be renovated this year. There had been prior communication with them, and the dialogue remains open. Next Tuesday at 12:00 noon, a new meeting will be held to specifically review each case and compare the information and records they have with those of the municipality, review who they are, what they sell, and discuss the alternatives the municipality can offer each of them,” commented the head of the General Secretariat Office.

Although no other internal irregularities have been detected so far, Margarita Valle indicated that those who may report irregularities such as irregular charges for the use of public space, extortion, or threats will be received and heard at the discussion tables.

Juan Carlos Arauz indicated that the work will consist of, among other things, replacing the lighting, renovating floors, benches, fountains, and other historic decorative elements, while always respecting the trees in this public space. The hydraulic lines will also be inspected.

Thus, he noted, work will be carried out simultaneously in each area of the park, divided in the central section by Juárez Avenue (the beginning of Vallarta Avenue).

He noted that safe spaces have been provided so that those entering or exiting the Light Rail at the Juárez station can do so safely and without incident. Furthermore, surveillance of this area and its surroundings will be maintained to ensure the safety of those who pass through, stated the Director of Public Works of Guadalajara.

A budget of 23 million pesos is planned for this project, which is included in the 100 million pesos that the Guadalajara City Hall has planned for the renovation of the city’s first square, previously announced by Mayor Verónica Delgadillo in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.

Given this, he said, this project seeks to highlight the essence of this park, originally designed by brothers Juan José and Luis Barragán and inaugurated in 1935, without neglecting the modifications made in 2013 by architect Juan Palomar Verea, in one of his most recent projects.

Thus, Arauz Abarca added, the Guadalajara City Hall’s Department of Culture is also participating in this renovation. “I believe, therefore, that this is an emblematic project for all the people of Guadalajara, because who doesn’t know the Red Park?” he commented.
