Due to various acts of violence reported in Baja California Sur, the U.S. Consulate issued a security alert for the municipalities of La Paz and Los Cabos, advising U.S. citizens to be alert for any signs of risk.
The U.S. government emphasized the acts of violence reported specifically between April 22 and 25.
It stemmed from two murders reported on April 22, the first in the community of Guerrero Negro when a second lieutenant of the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) was shot and killed by an armed group while carrying out civilian activities.
The second case reported that day occurred in the city of La Paz, when the commander of the Narcotics Unit of the State Attorney General’s Office (PGJE), Ulises Omar Cota Montaño, was killed by an armed group in the Camino Real neighborhood.
On April 24, the city of Cabo San Lucas documented an attack on transportation units. Three trucks were set on fire by civilians, according to authorities from the State Security Roundtable. This situation paralyzed this public service in Baja California Sur’s main tourist destination.
In the early morning of April 25, a shootout between security forces and a criminal cell was reported in neighborhoods of Cabo San Lucas, in an operation that resulted in the arrest of four civilians and one injured officer.
All these events were enough for the US government to issue a security alert today recommending that its citizens in La Paz and Los Cabos be vigilant and follow instructions from local authorities.
In addition to the reported threats against security force commanders, the US Consulate expects an increase in operations, restrictions on public service, and other strategies to mitigate the violence.
Therefore, the U.S. government has urged its citizens to avoid crowds, be aware of their surroundings, and leave any space when they perceive a disturbance in the social environment, as well as to stay in touch with friends and family.
