Sonora, a key location for the future of semiconductors in Mexico

Semiconductors are key to the country’s economic and technological growth, and Sonora is poised to be a strategic center for the development of this industry, said Francisco Acuña Méndez, Executive President of the Council for Sustainable Development of Sonora (Codeso), while representing Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño at the opening of the First National Semiconductor Meeting organized by the National Institute of Technology of Mexico.

Acuña Méndez thanked Ramón Jiménez López, Director General of the National Institute of Technology of Mexico, for choosing Sonora as the meeting’s host, recognizing the joint efforts of the public, private, and academic sectors to make this event a reality.

“It is an honor that they have chosen Sonora for this highly significant meeting. This is the result of the work we have been doing to make Sonora a benchmark state in the high-tech industry,” Acuña added.

He emphasized that, through the Sonora Sustainable Energy Plan and with the support of the federal government, the region is consolidating its position as a center for semiconductor manufacturing and design.

He also noted that the semiconductor industry will diversify Sonora’s economy and boost sectors such as electromobility and renewable energy, positioning Mexico as a key player in the global advanced technology supply chain.

Also attending the event were Diego Flores Jiménez, head of the Electronic and Digital Industry at the Ministry of Economy, as well as representatives from the National Institute of Technology of Mexico (TecNM), Foxconn, Qualcomm, and Skyworks, among others, who shared their experiences and visions on the future of semiconductors in Mexico.

Acuña emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration between government, academia, and industry to build a robust and sustainable ecosystem that drives technological innovation and job creation in the country.

Sonora as a Strategic Center for the Semiconductor Industry

Last Monday and Tuesday, Hermosillo hosted the First National Semiconductor Meeting, organized by the National Technological Institute of Mexico (TecNM).

Representatives from the academic and public sectors, as well as companies such as Foxconn, Qualcomm, and Skyworks, among others, attended the event, sharing their experiences and visions for the future of semiconductors in Mexico.

Representing Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño, the Executive President of the Council for Sustainable Development of Sonora (CODESO), Francisco Acuña Méndez, attended the event. He highlighted the crucial role that Sonora is playing in the development of this strategic industry.

Under the leadership of Governor Alfonso Durazo, Sonora has made progress in building an ecosystem for semiconductor manufacturing, including through talent training, partnerships with educational institutions, and investment promotion.
