As part of the 2025 Tourism Fair, Querétaro Governor Mauricio Kuri González announced the launch of a direct flight connecting the state capital with Madrid, Spain.

The governor told El Universal that Spain is the state’s second-largest trading partner, “with more than 200 companies established in the territory.”

The governor explained that this flight responds to a growing demand for tourism and business connections between Europe and the El Bajío region.

Nearly 119,000 passengers travel to Spain within a 200-kilometer radius, representing 11% of the total number of Mexican passengers visiting the European country.

With this new route, operated by the airline Iberojet, he indicated, the goal is to “provide quality tourism between sister nations and joint growth in the tourism, industrial, business, and commercial sectors.”

With this announcement, “Querétaro will become the first city in the Bajío region to have a direct flight to Europe.”

When will the Querétaro-Madrid flight begin?

Iberojet will permanently operate the Querétaro-Madrid route starting in October 2025, with two weekly flights, on Thursdays and Sundays.

Iberojet is an airline focused on the vacation tourism segment, offering charter and commercial services.

It is a subsidiary of Ávoris Corporación Empresarial, a specialized travel division of Grupo Barceló, based at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport and headquartered in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

Also present at the official announcement were Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, head of the Federal Tourism Secretariat; Javier Castillo Medina, general director of tour operations at Ávoris; and Adriana Vega Vázquez Mellado, Secretary of Tourism of Querétaro.

What aircraft models will be used to operate the Querétaro-Madrid route?

State-of-the-art Airbus A350 aircraft will be operated. These aircraft, the governor added, “will have the capacity to transport up to 900 people per week between Querétaro and Madrid.”

This represents “more options for tourists traveling to Europe, as well as those traveling from Europe to Mexico.”

Iberojet also connects to some destinations in Asia, such as Bangkok, and the Caribbean, such as Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), Varadero (Cuba), and San José (Costa Rica). It even has flights to Cancún.

How much will the direct flight from Querétaro to Madrid cost?

Official flight prices were not revealed, but one-way tickets are estimated to cost around 500 euros ($11,132 Mexican pesos) per person.

What is the capacity of Querétaro’s airport?

During the presentation of this new route, it was reported that, to date, Querétaro International Airport (AIQ) has 11 domestic flights (to cities such as Torreón, Puerto Vallarta, Hermosillo, Cancún, Mérida, Monterrey, Tijuana, and Mazatlán) and 6 routes to the United States.

“Our airport has much to offer, making it competitive with any airport in the world,” said Mauricio Kuri González.

The governor mentioned to El Universal some of the advantages of this airport terminal: “The large runway can handle any type of aircraft; Querétaro is in a strategic location with great connectivity; and the construction of the Mexico-Querétaro train, which will have a station at the airport. All of this gives us a competitive advantage.”

For his part, during the official presentation, Javier Castillo Medina, general director of tour operations at Ávoris, emphasized that “it’s not just about connecting two airports. This action represents a complete business project for the Ávoris group.”

This participation, he expressed, entails further plans for the corporation in Mexico, through its brands and services.

Tourism Minister Josefina Rodríguez Zamora emphasized that this new flight “will allow us to showcase our wealth, our communities, and our artisans, who will be able to showcase all the wonders they create in another country.

“The train is coming, the project that will also make tourism permanent.”

With this route, she added, “Querétaro’s tourist routes, such as those of wine and romance, will be introduced to the world.”
