The month of May is finally here, and in addition to commemorating several important dates in Mexico, authorities around the world are preparing for the upcoming start of the hurricane season, which will form in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. What is the first hurricane of 2025?

According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, United States, at least 36 natural phenomena are expected, ranging from tropical depressions to major hurricanes. To better identify them, each one is given a name, and therefore, we now know which one has been assigned to the first one.

What is the first cyclone of the season and when will it hit Mexico?

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is responsible for assigning names to meteorological events. Therefore, in 2025, the first hurricane to form in the Atlantic will be named Andrea, while in the Atlantic it will be known as Alvin, causing the first impacts in the country.

It is worth noting that in the Pacific, at least 19 meteorological phenomena typical of the hurricane season are expected, which will be:

Tropical depressions: 1
Tropical storms: 8
Strong hurricanes of categories 1 and 2: 6
Intense hurricanes of categories 3, 4, and 5: 4

When will ‘Alvin’ hit Mexico?

Based on information provided by the Meteorological Directorate of the Mexican Navy, the storm will begin in the Pacific Ocean on May 15, the estimated date Alvin will hit the country.

Regarding the areas of the Pacific that will be affected by the storm, these are:

Baja California Peninsula (west coast).
Baja California Peninsula (east coast), Sonora, Sinaloa, and Nayarit.
Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, and Guerrero.
Gulf of Tehuantepec (Oaxaca and Chiapas).

What other names will be given to the expected hurricane season phenomena?

In addition to Alvin, which would be the first tropical cyclone to form on the Pacific coast in 2025, the following tropical cyclones will be named: Barbara, Cosme, Dalila, Erick, Flossie, Gil, Henriette, Ivo, Juliette, Kiko, Lorena, Mario, Narda, Octave, Priscila, Raymond, Sonia, Tico, Velma, Wallis, Xina, York, and Zelda.

Why is hurricane season important in Mexico?

Hurricane season is important for Mexico for a variety of reasons, both positive and negative. Some of the most important are:

Recharging water sources: The intense rainfall associated with hurricanes and tropical storms is crucial for recharging the country’s aquifers, rivers, streams, and dams. This is especially important in arid and semi-arid regions, where this rainfall can mitigate droughts and ensure the supply of water for human consumption, agriculture, and even hydroelectric power generation.

Cleaning aquatic ecosystems: The increased flow of rivers and streams helps clean pollution and prevents water stagnation, which can be harmful to health and ecosystems.
Maintaining forest health: Strong winds can knock down old and diseased vegetation in jungles and tropical forests, allowing new plant growth and contributing to ecosystem renewal.
Ocean temperature regulation: Hurricanes help distribute heat from the oceans, acting as a natural cooling system and affecting global temperatures.
