Mérida Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada has signed a landmark agreement with the municipality of Playa del Carmen. The partnership aims to foster closer ties between the two cities and promote tourism initiatives that benefit local communities.
The collaboration agreement was unveiled yesterday at the Tianguis Turístico 2025 in Baja California, where Mayor Patrón met with her counterpart from Playa del Carmen, Angy Estefanía Mercado Asencio. The deal highlights the importance of tourism for economic, social, and cultural development in both cities.
“This agreement will enable us to exchange experiences and best practices in areas such as economy, tourism, culture, and labor,” Mayor Patrón explained during the ceremony. “I would like to thank Mayor Mercado Asencio for her support in forging this connection between our municipalities.”
Under the terms of the agreement, Mérida and Playa del Carmen will engage in joint initiatives to promote their tourist attractions and gastronomy. They will also exchange information, documentation, and promotional materials, as well as organize fairs, seminars, and conferences.
The two cities have committed to sharing expertise on preserving cultural heritage and promoting tourism in a sustainable manner. This includes exchanges on best practices in protecting archaeological sites, museums, and other cultural institutions.
In addition, the agreement aims to foster links with tourism industry chambers and associations to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences.
Mérida City Council also signed a letter of intent with Viva Aerobús, a leading Mexican airline, to boost tourism promotion in the Yucatecan capital. The deal was signed by Mayor Patrón and Walfred Castro, the airline’s Director of Corporate Communications.
The agreement will enable Mérida to leverage Viva Aerobús’ extensive connectivity and presence in national and international markets to promote its tourism industry.
“Mérida continues to strengthen strategic ties with key partners to showcase our unique cultural richness, gastronomy, and values,” Mayor Patrón said during the signing. “This alliance reinforces our commitment to promoting the pride of being a Méridan in every corner of Mexico and the world.”
