Durango maintains its economic growth

Durango has managed to maintain a positive trend in job creation, despite the negative impact that the crisis has had on the manufacturing sector in other parts of Mexico.

In a context of decline in manufacturing and job losses in this sector nationwide, the state of Durango has managed to overcome these difficulties and remains a benchmark in terms of economic growth.

Globally, the manufacturing industry has experienced a notable slowdown. In Mexico, the combination of factors such as rising energy costs, wage increases, and difficulties in international markets has led to the closure of several maquiladoras, resulting in the loss of thousands of jobs in various regions of the country. However, Durango has managed to mitigate these negative effects largely thanks to a diversified economic model and the dynamism of its productive sectors.

According to Fernando Rosas Palafox, Secretary of Economic Development in Durango, the crisis that affected the maquiladora industry did not have as direct an impact on the state as on other entities. While some maquiladoras have closed, job losses in the manufacturing sector have been less pronounced in Durango.

In fact, local authorities have managed to maintain a steady rate of job growth, with 9,500 new positions registered in recent months, representing progress toward the goal of generating between 10,000 and 12,000 additional jobs.

Where does Durango rank in terms of growth nationwide?

Durango’s economy has also maintained strong momentum thanks to growth in the industrial sector. In 2024, the state ranked second in terms of industrial growth in Mexico, behind only Oaxaca, with an 8.2% increase in activity.

This growth is the result of a series of domestic and foreign investments that have come to the region, diversifying the local economy and strengthening key sectors such as construction, manufacturing, and mining.

In particular, Durango has experienced a boom in the auto parts and assembly industry, which has attracted several national and international companies. Mining has also played a key role in this growth, with increased investment in the extraction of natural resources.

The combination of these factors has allowed Durango to remain an important industrial center in the north of the country, standing out from states such as Nuevo León and Chihuahua.

Boosting the Local Economy

Industrial growth has had a positive impact on Durango families, generating formal employment with better wages and stability. The construction and manufacturing sectors have been the largest generators of employment, which has contributed to improving the quality of life for the state’s residents.

In turn, the arrival of new foreign investment has strengthened the local economy. Business confidence in the government and in the state’s economic stability has been a key factor in Durango’s success.

In Durango, policies have been implemented that foster a favorable investment environment, resulting in an active circulation of resources within the region, boosting consumption and generating a virtuous cycle of growth.

Furthermore, local authorities remain optimistic about attracting more industrial projects, which could further consolidate Durango as an economic and employment center in the north of the country.
