After months of violent incidents in the municipality of Mulegé, this May 1st confirmed the outbreak of the war in northern Baja California Sur. Factions of the Pacific Cartel and/or Sinaloa Cartel (CDS) clashed in the community of San José de Magdalena, a mountainous area located 42 kilometers south of the municipal seat of Santa Rosalía.

Members of the Security Roundtable revealed in a bulletin that this location was the scene of a confrontation between two criminal groups.

“At approximately 3:26 p.m. this Thursday, May 1st, the PGJE received reports of two incidents in which two people were found dead; one inside a burned vehicle and another inside a cistern,” the State Attorney General’s Office (PGJE) stated.

Emergency units arrived at the scene, reaching the ranch known as “Pie de la Cuesta.” There, they located three burned vehicles and a charred body inside one of them. Additionally, on a nearby property, they found a dead man inside a cistern and a long gun.

The area was secured by security forces, who were assisted by the residents themselves, as they were unfamiliar with the area. However, intelligence confirmed the presence of “Los Mayitos” cells at the location, “gaining ground.”

“Los Mayitos entered through northern Baja California Sur, through the mountainous area, and spread out. Days before the confrontation, members of El Burro were raiding ranches in search of Mayos, those were the comments from the residents. Now there’s talk of a major blow to a group in the northern area allied with Los Chapitos,” the security source said.

The PGJE reported that ministerial investigations are underway, gathering evidence from the scene and analyzing the victims to identify them and thus bring justice to the alleged perpetrators.
