María Fernanda Vázquez, 30, died in Guaymas, Sonora, after allegedly being bitten by a recluse spider. Although she received medical attention, her life could not be saved.

According to local media, the incident occurred while the young woman was in her backyard. Presenting severe symptoms, she immediately went to a private clinic, but due to lack of improvement, she was transferred to the IMSS General Hospital Zone No. 4.

According to a statement from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), the patient was evaluated by the General Surgery Department, underwent laboratory tests, and was taken to the operating room due to her critical condition. After surgery, she was admitted to the shock room, where she suffered four cardiorespiratory arrests. On the last attempt, she could not be revived.

The IMSS stated that it kept the family informed at all times and that all available medical resources had been exhausted. However, reports from friends and family, reported by the local press, indicate that there were delays in care, which may have complicated her condition.

An obituary was released on social media mourning María Fernanda’s death and inviting friends and family to her funeral service, held on April 25 at 10:00 a.m.

Why is the brown recluse spider so dangerous?

The brown recluse spider (Loxosceles) is one of the most dangerous spiders in Mexico due to the damage its venom can cause, which destroys tissue and, in severe cases, can be lethal. Although small and nocturnal, it hides in dark corners of homes and offices.

According to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), its presence has been recorded throughout the country, most frequently in Baja California Sur, Guerrero, Jalisco, and the Valley of Mexico.

Claudia Isabel Navarro Rodríguez, a biologist at the UNAM Institute of Biology, warns that the bite may go unnoticed at first, but later causes pain, redness, fever, and vomiting. It is essential to see a doctor immediately, especially for children and older adults, who are more vulnerable to the effects of the venom.

Although brown recluse spiders reproduce most frequently during the rainy season, they can be found year-round.

What to do if a brown recluse spider bites you?

Stay calm.
Wash the wound with soap and water.
Do not apply ice, heat, alcohol, or ointments.
Do not try to suction the wound.
If possible, take a photo or capture the spider for identification.
Seek medical attention immediately.
Consult Redtox for the nearest hospital with antivenom.

How to prevent its presence in your home?

Shake out clothes, shoes, and blankets before using them.
Clean furniture, closets, and basements frequently.
Seal cracks and avoid storing boxes or wood.
Use lavender, peppermint, or lemon oils as a natural repellent.
