Yucatán’s Sea Turtle Nesting Season: Conservation Efforts Underway Along the Coast

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) has announced that sea turtle nesting season in Yucatán is now underway, with a projected end date of October. As the region prepares for the annual influx of these magnificent creatures, conservation activists and volunteers from eight turtle camps along the coast are working tirelessly to protect them.

The primary focus is on safeguarding three species: hawksbill, white, and loggerhead sea turtles. Trained staff and volunteers at the turtle camps patrol the beaches under the cover of darkness, using red-lighted lamps to avoid disorienting the turtles as they lay their eggs.

Conservation efforts are crucial considering several challenges facing these species, including illegal hunting, construction activities that disrupt nesting sites, and the presence of white lights along the coastline. According to Yeshua Giménez, a conservation technician, these factors pose significant threats to the well-being of the turtles.

“We need the public’s support,” Giménez emphasized, highlighting ways in which individuals can contribute to turtle conservation efforts. “If you have houses near the sea, replacing white lights with yellow ones can make a big difference. Additionally, supporting local collectives and initiatives is vital for our mission.”

Victoria Cob, leader of the Ak’ Kuxtal camp, shared insights into their nightly monitoring sessions: “At 10 p.m., we leave the breakwaters and patrol the entire area using red-lighted lamps to ensure that the turtles are not disoriented. We’re working towards a goal of at least 85% hatch rate success.”

As the sea turtle nesting season unfolds, conservationists urge residents and tourists alike to join forces in protecting these incredible creatures. By supporting local initiatives and making small changes in their daily lives, individuals can contribute significantly to preserving Yucatán’s rich marine biodiversity.
