Mexico has established itself as one of the main destinations in the global market for counterfeit goods.

According to the most recent report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the country ranks ninth in the world as a source of counterfeit goods, behind economies such as China, Turkey, and Hong Kong.

The study, titled Global Trade Map in Counterfeit Goods 2025, warns that this phenomenon represents a serious threat to intellectual property and consumer safety.

In 2021 alone, the value of global trade in counterfeit goods reached $467 billion. Mexican brands not only face economic losses but also reputational damage from being associated with this illegal network.

Furthermore, Mexico also appears as a destination for these products: in 2020, it was the seventeenth largest importer of counterfeit goods, behind the US and several European nations.

By sector, the country has a significant share in the export of textiles, electronics, footwear, and cosmetics, industries particularly vulnerable to piracy. Globally, clothing and footwear are the most seized.

‘Pirate’ Merchandise Proliferates in Nuevo León Despite Searches

Although Nuevo León is nationally recognized as a leading state in formal employment generation and with a robust economy, driven by its industrial vocation and entrepreneurial spirit, it faces a phenomenon that contrasts with this image of development: the normalization of piracy.

The sale of counterfeit merchandise has spread throughout the Monterrey Metropolitan Area, from street markets to established stores in shopping malls, where it is common to find products at less than half their original price.

In a tour conducted by ABC News through different municipalities, the wide range of sneakers, t-shirts, sweatshirts, perfumes, and even liquor was observed, all at prices well below those marked in official stores.
