Terror on the Mexico-Querétaro Highway: Criminals place rocks to rob motorists

2

Early Friday morning, the Mexico-Querétaro Highway was once again the scene of violence and impunity after criminals placed rocks on the asphalt to force motorists to stop so they could rob them.

In total, nearly half a dozen vehicles were damaged at different points along the highway, with no arrests or active presence of the National Guard (GN) reported.

The first incident occurred at kilometer 69, on the stretch leading to the Tepeji Industrial Park at the entrance to Tepeji del Río.

A woman reported that the public transport vehicle she was traveling in, which transports workers to the park, was unable to avoid the intentionally placed rocks, sustaining significant damage. Although no robbery was carried out in this case, alarms were raised due to the increasingly frequent modus operandi.

Minutes later, users reported the presence of at least three compact vehicles stopped on the side of the highway, also with damaged tires, although the exact kilometer was not specified.

All the cars were heading toward Querétaro and had similar characteristics: flat tires and signs of having tried to avoid obstacles placed on the road.

A third report, shared on social media, warned of large rocks on the asphalt. The shared image shows a passenger bus apparently damaged, indicating that not even public transportation is safe from these criminal acts.

Rocks are thrown at windows

According to witnesses and citizen reports, criminals have evolved their criminal technique: they no longer just place rocks, but in some cases, they throw them directly at moving vehicles, putting the lives of the occupants at serious risk.

The situation has become unsustainable for freight, private, and passenger drivers, as they are frequently assaulted on this highway. They point to the lack of intervention by authorities, especially the National Guard, whose presence is virtually nonexistent in this critical area.

It is worth noting that last year, this type of assault claimed the lives of at least twenty people, including operators, drivers, security guards, and civilians. The assailants act with extreme violence, shooting without regard for the lives of passengers.

They demand that the authorities implement permanent surveillance operations on the most dangerous sections of the Mexico-Querétaro Highway and guarantee the safety of the thousands of users who travel there daily.
