Collective Warns of More Than 200 Cases of Disappearances in Yucatán

Yucatán, a state often perceived as serene and tranquil, conceals a dark reality. At least 200 cases of disappearance have plagued the region, with many going unreported due to fear or lack of institutional support. The collective “Stronger Than Ever,” comprised of searching mothers, has been vocal about this issue, shedding light on the plight of families affected by these tragedies.

According to Maricel Orozco, president of the collective, there are currently 12 mothers actively involved in the search group within the state. However, the true extent of the problem is far more profound, with a substantial number of cases accumulating overtime. “The authorities often instruct them not to speak out or approach anyone, leaving families in silence due to fear,” Orozco explained.

To raise awareness and encourage affected families to come forward, the collective makes a direct appeal for support. “We want Yucatán to remain a peaceful place, but it’s crucial that we acknowledge these cases and break our silence,” she emphasized.

Regarding the causes behind these disappearances, Orozco acknowledged that some may be linked to domestic violence or sexual abuse. Nevertheless, a significant proportion of reported cases cannot be attributed to these factors. “We’ve searched extensively, and it’s not just about those issues… it encompasses various aspects, making it urgent for us to address and prevent further occurrences,” she stated.

The collective emphasizes the importance of support among searching families and warns that institutional or social inaction can exacerbate the crisis. “We’re here to offer assistance; all we ask is that affected families come forward,” Orozco concluded.
