To enter, visitors must go through security at Gate 2 before boarding.

At 90 meters (295 feet), the Barque Eagle is the largest sailing vessel under the U.S. flag and the only square brig still in active service within a government agency. It was built in 1936 by the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, and originally served as the Horst Wessel in the German Navy.

At the end of World War II, the ship was returned to the United States as part of war reparations.

Since 1946, the Eagle has served as a training platform for future Coast Guard officers, offering leadership and maritime skills training for both Academy cadets and officer candidates.

Puerto Vallarta is the Eagle’s second stop on its West Coast voyage, marking the beginning of a 14-week period of onboard instruction.

The experience reflects the Coast Guard’s deep naval heritage and commitment to service.

In addition to its educational role, the Eagle also serves as a floating ambassador of goodwill, fostering bonds of friendship with the nations it visits.

Those interested in learning more about the ship, its crew, or upcoming ports of call can visit the United States Coast Guard Barque EAGLE Facebook page or follow its Instagram account @barqueeagle.
